    We use simple past to an action that begins and ends on the past.

    The progressive past is used in actions that was in progress at specific time in the past.

    Past progressive is used to describe an action in the past which may or may not continue after the specific time.

  7. Simple past talks about something that happened before and past progressive talks about something that was happening before, but for a period of time.
    "A year ago, Cilic missed the U.S. Open because he was serving a suspension after testing positive for a banned stimulant. Though he faced a two-year ban, he appealed, arguing that he had unintentionally ingested the substance in a glucose tablet, and succeeded in having the suspension lifted after four months"

    The simple past was used to describe an action that was completed at a specific time in the past and the past progressive was used to talk about an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.

  12. When you want to talk about something that happened at a specific time, you can use simple past. Ex: She married in 2000. But, if you want to describe a situation that was happening at a specific time, use past progressive. Ex: She was working in Salvador in 2000.
